Her most favorite activities would be playing the flute in her school band, being president of her local Government Youth Council, participating in FCCLA, Upward Bound, and Gearing Up. Her favorite classes at school are band, math, and FACs. She enjoys hanging out with her friends and family, as well as, listening to music and taking pictures. Her future plans include going to college for photography and also studying to get a degree in dentistry and oral care. She would like to become a billionaire one day, in order to be able to help others around the world and in her community. She enjoys making people smile and laugh and tries to be a friend to everyone. She is very helpful and willing to serve others. When Kayla learned that she was nominated to be a Student Ambassador for the United States of America, she became really excited for the opportunity to go overseas and learn new cultures, as well as, meeting new and exciting people. She knew this would look great on any college application and set her apart from other students. She knew this was her chance to really be able to expand herself and do some independent growing. What better way is there to learn, than with first-hand experiences? As an Ambassador, Kayla will be given the chance to meet and talk with members of Parliament in England, go to Scotland and learn about the early Vikings and their ways of living, stay with an Irish family and learn their daily routines around the farm, as well as, visit the elderly of an Irish village and serve them by doing various service projects in Ireland and Northern Ireland, and last but not least, go to Wales and study first-hand in a Welsh castle about Medieval history. She will also get to enjoy many fun activities like: repelling down a Welsh castle wall, white-water-rafting in Scotland, attending a bbq in Ireland with local Irish students, and maybe catch a play or two at the theaters in England. This is not your typical vacation-type of trip, this learning at its BEST… Kayla will be receiving high school and college credits for her studies. The People to People movement was launched in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. For nearly 50 years, People to People Ambassador Programs has served as People to People International's global educational travel provider, organizing and promoting opportunities for bridging cultural and political borders through direct interaction, unparalleled access, and unique experiences. Today, People to People Ambassador Programs travels to every continent on the globe and offers programs for students, educators, and professionals.
"I have long believed, as have many before me, that peaceful relations between nations require mutual respect between individuals," said President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He put the ideal behind these words into practice when he launched the People to People initiative in 1956. Since that time, U.S. presidents have served as the honorary chairman of People to People International.
As President John F. Kennedy so eloquently said, "The nature of People to People activities is as varied as the individuals involved. The housewife whose recipe contains the yeast of kindness, the soldier whose arms embrace homeless waifs, the doctor who heals with humility, all assert a single theme—the power of people, acting as individuals, to respond imaginatively to the world's need for peace."

This past weekend I had the opportunity to see Red Tails. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. What's not to like about the Tuskegee Airmen story? A compelling story, beautiful black men, action, and war is what Red Tails is all about.

A film finally depicting Black men shown with dignity, pride, and heroism. It made me proud to see a Hollowood glammed up story about a big piece of our history. I left the theatre swooning over Nate Parker and cheering my love Aaron McGruder for his contributions to the movie.

I was surprised to wake up the next morning to learn that a group of black women are boycotting Red Tails. Their gripe with the film was the lack of Black women – more specifically, the fictional love story between Thunder and a young German woman.

Ladies, this is not a history lesson -- this is a movie for fun.

Why can't our men have a movie for themselves? This is a wonderful film for our boys and men. Do you ladies remember how excited we were when Princess and the Frog came out? Little girls finally had a princess to look up to with pride in Princess Tiana. I feel that Red Tails is a great story for our little boys and men.

It would have been great to see sisters represented in the film. We all know that the Tuskegee Airmen had the tremendous support of their mothers, wives, sisters, and girlfriends. Red Tails made mention of a wife and child when one of the young men went missing. Some of the men even rocked wedding bands – but that’s beside the point.

Sisters, this film was for our men. This film has little to do with the constant tug-of-war we choose to pursue. This was a war film with a diverse cast.

Instead of complaining about the lack of Black feminine representation, why don't we celebrate the positive representation? I read somewhere that George Lucas has two more scripts: a prequel (I’m sure there will be a need for women) and a sequel (after the war -- and again, I am sure there will be a need for women). These films can only be made if we support Red Tails!

Let's not miss out on an awesome opportunity to support some of our finest black actors.

Woman to Woman!

It’s 10:53 on a hot and humid summer night and you’re in a cab riding home with your not-so-new-ish boyfriend after a wonderful date. Warm air is steadily blowing through the window as you hold hands and the city skyline recedes as you ride down the expressway.  It feels like a scene straight out of the movie “Love Jones” and there is nothing more that you want than for as Luther Vandross would say “the night to stay.”

As you look into each others eyes, you become painfully aware of the dizzying heat between you. The tension is undeniable. He’s feeling it. You're feeling it too as you hold your breath when he leans in for a gentle, lingering kiss.

You’ve pulled up in front of your building and as the cab’s engine idles, your blood begins to race.  Suddenly your mutual hypnosis is interrupted when the driver impatiently asks "Where’s the next stop?"  Heart pounding, you pull away from each other and your man asks the inevitable question "Do you want me to come inside?"

The woman in you is wants to exclaim “Yes!” but the mother in you wrestles with the bigger picture.  So as much as it pains you to do so, you exit the cab with a longing glance backward as your beloved heads off into the night.  You head into your apartment. Alone. For as much as you want him to come upstairs, as a mother you know your children's emotional well-being first.
